Mat

Mat Louwrens was trained as a commercial artist and won the coveted award for the best Annual Report design while he managed the finished artwork studio of Hortors Printers for a period of ten years.

Mat also had his own freelance studio for 17 years and was commissioned by De Beers, which sent him to Sweden, Ireland and England to gather material for a series of 60 paintings to hang in their various centres throughout the world.

His book Victorian Pietermaritzburg took him 3 years to produce, and depicts, in watercolours, the architectural beauties of that city. It is now out of print and has become an item of Africana

Mat has exhibited his work extensively in South Africa, as well as internationally (Canada and USA.)

What sets him apart is that he now also produces detailed paintings using mineral sands and these are done without any paint whatsoever. He has also extended this medium to sculptures also finished in durable mineral sand. These 'sand' paintings and sculptures can be viewed in the section devoted to them where there is also a description of how they are produced.
